Should You Redesign or Rebuild Your Squarespace Website?
A Squarespace website redesign is usually the right choice when your existing structure, content and functionality still support your business. A complete rebuild is more appropriate when the website has confusing navigation, outdated content, technical limitations or a structure that no longer reflects what your business offers.
The decision should not be based only on how the website looks. You should also consider its SEO value, mobile usability, conversion journey, Squarespace version, integrations and future business goals.
Quick answer: redesign or rebuild?
Choose a Squarespace redesign if your website’s foundation is still working and the main problems involve appearance, messaging, layout or conversions.
Choose a Squarespace rebuild if the site structure, content, platform setup or functionality prevents you from achieving your current business goals.
In my work across more than 450 Squarespace websites, I have found that many businesses do not need to replace everything. However, continuing to patch a fundamentally weak website can eventually cost more than rebuilding it properly.
What is a Squarespace website redesign?
A Squarespace website redesign improves an existing website without replacing its entire foundation.
The project may include:
Updating colours, fonts and brand styling
Improving page layouts
Creating stronger headlines and calls to action
Restructuring individual service pages
Improving mobile layouts
Simplifying navigation
Adding testimonials and case studies
Improving forms and enquiry paths
Correcting on-page SEO issues
Removing outdated sections
Reorganising existing content
Most important pages and URLs remain in place. The website becomes easier to use and more closely aligned with the current business.
A redesign is generally faster and carries less SEO risk because fewer URLs and structural elements need to change.
What is a Squarespace website rebuild?
A Squarespace rebuild involves creating a new website structure rather than continuing to modify the existing one.
You may retain selected content, images, products and brand assets, but the website is planned again around your current audience and business goals.
A rebuild may include:
Creating a new sitemap
Replanning the visitor journey
Rewriting most website content
Consolidating overlapping pages
Creating new service pages
Replacing outdated custom code
Rebuilding navigation
Moving from Squarespace 7.0 to 7.1
Reconfiguring eCommerce or scheduling
Mapping old URLs to new pages
Reconnecting analytics and integrations
The goal is not simply to produce a different visual style. It is to establish a cleaner, more flexible foundation for the business.
Squarespace redesign vs rebuild
Compare both approaches to understand which solution provides the strongest foundation for your website and business.
| Question | Redesign | Rebuild |
|---|---|---|
| Is the current structure retained? | Mostly | Usually not |
| Is existing content reused? | Yes, with improvements | Only the strongest content |
| Will URLs change? | Usually only a few | More likely |
| Is the design system replaced? | Often | Yes |
| Is custom code reviewed? | Yes | Often replaced |
| What is the SEO risk? | Generally lower | Requires detailed planning |
| Who is it best for? | Businesses with a sound foundation | Businesses with structural limitations |
Neither option is automatically better. The right choice depends on the problems that must be solved.
Five signs your Squarespace website needs a redesign
1. The website looks outdated, but the structure still works
Your navigation may be clear and your pages may contain useful content, but the visual design no longer represents the quality of your business.
A redesign can update typography, spacing, imagery, colours and layouts without changing every page.
2. Visitors can find information, but they are not taking action
If people visit your website without contacting you, the problem may involve weak calls to action, unclear service positioning or insufficient trust signals.
A conversion-focused redesign can improve:
Homepage messaging
Service descriptions
Button placement
Testimonials
Portfolio presentation
Contact options
Mobile enquiry paths
3. Your website is already on Squarespace 7.1
Squarespace 7.1 provides flexible design controls and Fluid Engine layouts. All version 7.1 websites share the same core feature set, so you do not need to switch templates to create a significantly different appearance.
In many cases, an experienced Squarespace designer can transform a 7.1 website while retaining its strongest content and settings.
4. Most of your content is still relevant
Existing pages may already appear in search results, receive backlinks or answer important customer questions.
Replacing this content without reviewing its value can create unnecessary SEO risk. Improving and reorganising it is often the better strategy.
5. The problems are mainly visual or presentational
A redesign is usually sufficient when the issues include:
Inconsistent fonts
Weak spacing
Poor image selection
Unclear visual hierarchy
Outdated colours
Uneven page layouts
Weak mobile presentation
Too many competing styles
These are substantial problems, but they do not necessarily require a complete rebuild.
Six signs your Squarespace website needs a rebuild
1. The website represents an older version of your business
A website created several years ago may target the wrong customers, present outdated services or use messaging that no longer reflects your expertise.
If your offer has changed significantly, your website structure may also need to change.
2. The navigation has become confusing
Businesses frequently add pages without reviewing the overall sitemap. This can result in duplicated services, hidden information and navigation labels that make sense internally but confuse visitors.
A rebuild allows the navigation to be planned around what potential clients actually need.
3. Visitors cannot understand what you offer
If the homepage presents several unrelated messages or every page has a different objective, changing the colours will not solve the problem.
A stronger customer journey should:
Confirm that the visitor is in the right place.
Explain the problem you solve.
Present the appropriate service.
Provide evidence and credibility.
Lead towards an enquiry, booking or purchase.
4. The website contains years of temporary fixes
Old code snippets, duplicated sections, abandoned integrations and one-off layout corrections can make a website difficult to maintain.
If every new update creates another problem, rebuilding the site may be more efficient than continuing to patch it.
5. The website structure is limiting SEO
A rebuild may be appropriate when:
Several pages target the same keyword
Important services have no dedicated pages
URLs are inconsistent
Outdated pages create 404 errors
Content is duplicated
Internal linking is weak
Blog categories have no clear structure
Search engines cannot easily identify the website’s main topics
These are structural issues rather than design issues.
6. You need substantially different functionality
Adding eCommerce, memberships, courses, scheduling, multilingual content or a new lead-generation process may require a new page structure.
The functionality should be integrated into the customer journey rather than attached to a website built for a different purpose.
Should you rebuild a Squarespace 7.0 website?
Not automatically.
Squarespace provides an update tool for eligible websites moving from version 7.0 to 7.1. According to Squarespace’s current version-update documentation, the tool can retain important information such as SEO settings, orders, customer data, domains and URL mappings.
However, publishing the update is permanent, and some older 7.0 features do not have exact 7.1 equivalents. The preview should therefore be reviewed carefully before completing the update.
For a content-heavy or active eCommerce website, updating the existing installation may be safer than creating a separate site.
For a small, outdated or inactive website, rebuilding directly in version 7.1 may provide a cleaner result.
Will redesigning a Squarespace website hurt SEO?
A redesign does not automatically hurt SEO. Problems normally occur when valuable content is removed, URLs change without redirects or search engines can no longer access important pages.
The safest approach is to preserve valuable URLs and content wherever possible.
If a URL must change, create a permanent 301 redirect from the old address to the closest relevant new page. Do not redirect every deleted page to the homepage.
Squarespace recommends recording the old and new URLs before launching and adding redirects wherever they do not match. See its official guidance on protecting SEO during a redesign or migration.
How to redesign or rebuild a Squarespace website safely
Step 1: Audit the current website
Review:
Pages and navigation
Search traffic
Popular URLs
Mobile layouts
Website forms
Existing integrations
Custom code
Products or booking systems
Conversion paths
Broken links
This separates surface-level design issues from structural problems.
Step 2: Define the website’s primary objective
The new website should have one clear commercial priority.
This could be:
Generating enquiries
Booking consultations
Selling products
Selling courses
Building an email list
Presenting a professional portfolio
Secondary actions can still exist, but they should not compete with the main objective.
Step 3: Plan the sitemap
Each important service should have a clear place within the website.
Avoid creating several pages that answer the same question or target the same search intent. Every page should have a distinct purpose.
Step 4: Record existing URLs
Create a spreadsheet containing:
Current URL
Current page purpose
Organic search value
New URL
Redirect requirement
Status after launch
This becomes the SEO migration plan.
Step 5: Develop a consistent design system
Define:
Heading styles
Paragraph styles
Colours
Buttons
Section spacing
Image treatments
Form styling
Mobile behaviour
A design system prevents the website from becoming inconsistent as new pages are added.
Step 6: Improve content and conversion paths
Every important page should answer:
Who is this for?
What problem does it solve?
What is included?
Why should the visitor trust this business?
What should the visitor do next?
This creates content that is easier for visitors, search engines and AI systems to understand.
Step 7: Test the mobile experience
Review the website on multiple screen sizes.
Check:
Headline wrapping
Content order
Image cropping
Navigation
Button sizes
Forms
Spacing
Horizontal overflow
Booking and checkout processes
Fluid Engine allows mobile layouts to be adjusted separately, but they still require deliberate testing.
Step 8: Complete launch checks
Before publishing, verify:
Page titles and descriptions
Image alt text
301 redirects
Internal links
Forms and email delivery
Analytics
Google Search Console
Social-sharing images
Favicon
Custom 404 page
Desktop and mobile layouts
Step 9: Monitor the website after launch
Review search visibility, enquiries, engagement and technical issues during the first few weeks.
A redesign is not complete simply because the new design is live. Real visitor behaviour often identifies additional improvements.
Frequently asked questions
-
Yes. Squarespace 7.1 websites share the same core feature set. Their appearance can be changed using site styles, page sections, Fluid Engine layouts and custom code where appropriate.
-
It depends on the project. A duplicate provides a separate working environment, but Squarespace notes that selling settings, orders, subscriptions, domains and certain other site-specific settings do not copy. Review the official site-duplication limitations before using this method for an active business.
-
Yes. Relevant posts should normally be retained and improved. Remove or combine content only after reviewing its traffic, backlinks, relevance and internal links.
-
There is no fixed schedule. A redesign is appropriate when the website no longer supports the brand, visitor needs or business goals. Performance and conversion data are more useful than the age of the design alone.
-
The timeline depends on page count, content, custom functionality, feedback and whether SEO migration is required. A small visual redesign may take days, while a complete strategic rebuild may require several weeks.
-
Yes, when it improves messaging, navigation, trust, mobile usability and calls to action. A visual update alone will not necessarily increase enquiries.
-
Only if your required functionality cannot be delivered reliably within Squarespace. Many businesses can achieve substantial improvements through a strategic redesign, version update or custom development without changing platforms.
