Why Is My Squarespace Website Slow? Practical Fixes Before a Redesign

A slow website can be frustrating when you have invested time in making it look professional. The page may open quickly on your computer, yet take noticeably longer on a customer's phone. Or a speed-testing tool may show a low score even though the site seems usable.

The right response is to investigate what is slow and why. A Squarespace website can be affected by large media files, busy layouts, third-party scripts and custom features. You may be able to improve the experience without rebuilding everything.

First, describe the problem

“The website is slow” can mean several things. The first screen might remain blank, the main image might arrive late, the menu might hesitate after a tap, or content might move while the page loads.

Write down the affected page, device, browser and action. Check the published website while logged out of the editor. Test more than the homepage; a gallery or shop page may behave differently.

If the problem suddenly appears across the whole site, check for a service issue and recent changes before making extensive design edits.

Use a test result as a diagnosis

PageSpeed Insights can help identify loading and interaction problems. Read the findings beneath the headline score instead of treating one number as the complete verdict.

Lab tests simulate a visit under defined conditions. Field data, when available, reflects real visitor experiences over time. These are different kinds of evidence and can produce different impressions of the same page.

Run comparable tests and record the date, URL and conditions. A single result can vary because of network conditions or changing third-party requests. Look for repeated issues that match what you observe.

Review the first visible section

The hero section deserves attention because it is often the first thing visitors need. A large background video, multiple image layers and complex animation can create more work before the page communicates its offer.

Ask what the visitor needs to understand immediately. Keep a clear headline and next step. Use media that helps explain the business, rather than adding movement simply because it looks impressive in the editor.

If the main image is a likely bottleneck, review its source dimensions, file format and delivery. Do not remove an important image without considering a more efficient version.

Prepare images for their purpos

A file exported directly from a camera or design application may contain far more data than the website needs. Choose dimensions suitable for its displayed role and compress it while checking the visual result.

A small thumbnail does not need the same source file as a full-width photograph. Screenshots with fine text need careful treatment so compression does not make them unreadable.

Squarespace's page-size guidance explains why the content added to a page affects loading. Review the actual page rather than assuming that the platform will make any upload efficient automatically.

Be selective with video and galleries

Video can explain a product or communicate an atmosphere, but several videos on one page may be unnecessary. Decide which clip genuinely supports the visitor's task.

A selected portfolio is often easier to browse than a page containing every image from every project. Group large collections into relevant pages and give visitors a clear route to more detail.

Keep useful content accessible. Avoid replacing an oversized gallery with a confusing interaction that makes the page technically lighter but harder to use.

Audit third-party tools

Chat widgets, review feeds, maps, social embeds, heatmaps, booking tools and advertising scripts can all add requests or processing work.

Create an inventory showing what each tool does, who uses it and where it is needed. You may discover duplicate tracking installations or an old tool that no longer supports the business.

Do not remove analytics, consent tools or booking scripts blindly. Identify dependencies and test changes carefully. Where practical, load a feature only on the pages that need it, using a supported implementation.

The aim is to keep useful functionality while removing unnecessary work.

Review custom code with a developer

Custom CSS and JavaScript can improve a Squarespace website, but copied snippets can accumulate without anyone maintaining them. A slider may load a library that another component also loads. An animation may repeatedly run work even when its section is not visible.

Ask a developer to identify what each customization supports. Keep a backup, change one area at a time and test the affected feature after every change.

A shorter code file is not automatically faster. The important question is what the browser must download and execute, and whether that work is necessary.

Simplify typography and movement

A refined design does not require numerous font families and weights. Use a small, purposeful type system and remove unused variants where your setup allows it.

Review animations that delay the appearance of essential information. A headline should not make visitors wait simply to read what the business provides.

Also watch for layout movement. Images, fonts, banners and embeds can shift content as they load. Reserve sensible space and test the page as it appears, not only after everything has settled.

Keep mobile usability in the review

A lighter page can still be difficult to use. After making performance changes, check navigation, image crops, buttons and forms on a real phone.

Complete a representative customer journey: open a service page, read the evidence, choose the main action and submit an enquiry. If the process works smoothly, that is more useful than a better score paired with a broken form.

Use the Squarespace mobile optimization guide to review the layout alongside loading behaviour.

Prioritize fixes by effort and impact

Begin with clear problems: oversized media, unused embeds, duplicated scripts or an unnecessarily heavy first section. Record a baseline before changing them.

Retest the same pages after each meaningful change. Keep notes so you can connect an improvement or regression with the work performed.

Some platform resources are outside your control. A realistic optimization plan separates editable page content and custom code from the managed platform itself. Avoid any proposal promising a perfect score under all conditions.

When is a redesign justified?

A targeted cleanup may be enough if the structure and content still work. A redesign becomes more useful when the site is also confusing, inconsistent or difficult to maintain.

Do not rebuild solely because a testing tool displays one low score. First identify the cause and compare the cost of focused improvements with the benefits of a wider project.

For that decision, see Squarespace redesign versus rebuild.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Squarespace website be made faster?

Often, yes. The available improvements depend on the site's media, integrations, custom code and design. Start with an audit of the actual pages.

Should I delete all animations?

No. Keep useful effects that perform well. Remove or simplify motion that delays content, consumes unnecessary resources or interferes with interaction.

Does a higher score guarantee more enquiries?

No. Performance is one part of the experience. Clear offers, relevant traffic, trust and working contact routes matter too.
